Happy Birthday, Woody Hayes

Wayne Woodrow "Woody" Hayes was born on this day in 1913.

In 1977, the BBC went to visit Coach Hayes ...
If you only pick up one word today and learn to avoid that word [apathy] like the plague. You'll see him all over the campus.  He'll be all over here and he is never the guy that's done one damn thing to civilization, not one thing ...

Whither leadership?

Never.

You'll find out that nothing that comes easy is worth a dime. As a matter of fact, I never saw a football player make a tackle with a smile on his face. Never.

Earn.

For the Ohio "fans" who say they won't watch their team play in the Cotton Bowl because they're not in the playoff ...

I've had smarter people around me all my life, but I haven't run into one yet that can outwork me. And if they can't outwork you, then smarts aren't going to do them much good. That's just the way it is. And if you believe that and live by it, you'd be surprised at how much fun you can have. Any time you give a man something he doesn't earn, you cheapen him.

Respect.

You can't respect somebody else until you've learned to respect yourself.

Woody Hayes

I remember passing Coach Hayes in my dorm one night after dinner in Park Hall.  He stopped walking, smiled, looking me right in the eye and asked, "How are your studies?" We talked for only a few minutes, but I left him feeling like I was invincible.  It was his constant eye contact and the sincere tone of  in his voice.
