There are few writers who so often characterize smells, for instance, as Hemingway does. Sights and sounds, too, are great sources of pleasure for the Hemingway heroes. They are almost always great lovers of what Hemingway calls “country”—a word that seems to include every aspect of a natural scene that can be taken in by sight, hearing, touch, and sense of smell.
