REFUGE
I watched the sunset on Mars
through a space-probe camera's eye.
It dropped down so quickly --
like a diver in a slow-motion film
plunging into darkness
through a splash of light.
I heard a soft knocking
at my door.
Then an acorn struck
and rolled forever down the roof.
A crow cawed faintly
beyond the closed window.
Autumn, and the fire
flaps like a heavy canvas in the wind.
