Memorizing by rote, of course, is no good for anyone. But memorizing that comes out of deep reading and reading out loud to yourself so that you are really struggling with something that finds you and won't leave you does a great deal for people. The more profoundly people love and understand literature, the less likely they are to be supercilious, to feel that somehow they know more than the poems, stories, novels, and epics actually know.
