"I am not one who was born in the custody of wisdom. I am one who is fond of olden times and intense in quest of the sacred knowing of the ancients." Gustave Courbet

Surprise.

To "crack on like smoke and oakum" is an old nautical phrase that means to sail fast and furious. However, the phrase has connotations of stealth, silence and importantly surprise!

The phrase "Smoke and Oakum" was used commonly by Patrick O'Brian, CBE (12 December 1914 – 2 January 2000) especially in the latter part of his series of Napoleonic naval stories. The 22 1/4 Aubrey/Maturin books is a must read for any budding sailor, especially those that want to get on in the Royal Navy. O'Brian was an excellent researcher reading many factual naval escapades especially of those of Admiral Lord Thomas Cochrane, (14 December 1775 – 31 October 1860).

LET FLY!

Thanks, Smoke n' Oakum!
