Händel, Messiah

Händel's Messiah was originally an Easter tradition: the work was conceived as a sacred oratorio so that it could be performed during Lent, during which there was a papal ban on "spectacles" (opera). In 1743, Händel gave the London premiere of Messiah at Covent Garden Theatre, establishing a springtime (Lenten) concert series that he would hold annually until the end of his life.
