"I am not one who was born in the custody of wisdom. I am one who is fond of olden times and intense in quest of the sacred knowing of the ancients." Gustave Courbet

Curse.

Once you really know the history of Native Americans, if you put a sheet over the American continent you can see all the places where the blood soaks through.  And once you know that, once you start in on that, you can become buried in an instant thinking about what went on in terms of human suffering.  We need to pay attention to what we've done to that land and native peoples before we strangle on our own detritus, which we of course are already doing.  We've shit on our doorstep until we can't see the doorstep anymore.

When I was asked in an interview about how Chief Seattle's curse haunts us, I said, "They got even with us by allowing us to invent television."  Curses come in very ordinary ways.  Television is their curse on us.  We don't live anymore, we watch.
