A big day in the history of art

This day, in 1512, Michelangelo's frescoes on the ceiling of the Vatican's Sistine Chapel were first exhibited to the public. Arguably Michelangelo's masterpiece, they remain today a high-water mark in the history of art.

In 1980, The Vatican voted to begin what would become a 12 year, multi-million dollar restoration project to bring the "original" beauty back to the paintings. At the time, many argued that the removal of centuries of soot and grime would deteriorate the true work of The Master painter. Others claimed that it only arrested the speeding processes of decay.

OH YES! Today is the birthdate of Sir Benjamin Guinness, philanthropist and brewer, in 1798. He was the grandson of the brewery's founder, Arthur Guiness. Philanthropist and brewer? Isn't that redundant? Have a pint for Sir Ben, It's Good For You!
